Description:

Dredge MCFARLAND on New York Harbor. Built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the McFarland helps maintain depth in Federal channels. Based in Philadelphia, she is shown last summer approaching Buttermilk Channel in New York for a day's work. She is a tanker which contains the dredged material internally. The "cantilver bridge" on her back is a boom for depositing the dredge spoil to the side, one of several methods of disposal built into this unusual ship. More dredges and related equipment at my website, www.don-sutherland. com .
