Description:

The ferry "Nida" against the backdrop of the hangars of the "Neutief" airfield in Die Frische Nehrung, The Vistula Spit, Baltiyskaya kosa.Photo by Aleksandr Podgorchuk. The construction of the airfield was carried out in 1934-39. By the end of construction, two runways were built at an angle of 45 degrees, which made it possible to operate the airfield in almost any weather with any wind direction, a water area for seaplanes was equipped and 3 huge concrete hangars 100x30 meters for aircraft were built, and 2 metal ones for other equipment. From this airfield in 1941-43, air attacks were carried out against Soviet targets in Belarus and the Leningrad region. In 1945, shortly before the Soviet troops stormed Pilau (Königsberg had already been taken), the Germans abandoned the airfield and retreated to the West, not having had time to destroy it, as planned. After the war, according to eyewitnesses, everything remained in perfect condition: the hangar gates were electrified, everything was preserved and worked. Later, the Soviet and then Russian airfield "Kosa" was located on this site, on which a separate anti-submarine aviation squadron was based. The anti-submarine squadron, which was armed with the PBY "Catalina" USA seaplanes entered the USSR under Lend-Lease, "Beriev Be-6" NATO name "Madge" and "Beriev Be-12 Chayka"- NATO name "Mail" flying boats, existed from 1945 to 1998.
