@ Jens and all
"Frucht" fahrt ist not necessarily "reefer" or done by reefer ships. I was in 1979 as AB on a general cargo vessel from Meyer-Brake and she carried grapefruits and oranges from Israel to Italy and England. It is done just by ventilating high volumes of air through the holds with no refrigeration !!! But she was clearly a general cargo vessel

Just back from holliday,
Just see the discussion.

I have been onboard the vessel and sister sometimes when they were running to Moerdijk (NLD).

She has cargo holds with cooling plant to cool the cargo hold (So than it's a reefer). At the time they were running to Moerdijk this was dismanteled already for some years. No cellguides were in the hatches (as far as I rememeber) but you could place the containers in some space in the hold (stacking cones). So than she was officially a general cargo vessel.
There are many more vessel which carrying containers but are not a containership. The difference is the carco hold fitted with cellguides or not.

Later she was converted into livestock carrier.

@pietermelissen in the article you mention is containers are plugged in 330 V power socked not cooled by ships refigeration plant, so that is a containership not a reefership.

So it's a container ship then.

And regarding the discussion how to classify this ship, a tank container with chemicals, does not turn a containership into a chemical tanker....my two cents, this is a containership.

My comment below related to the "new" ship, this was the one that I had in mind.

Reefer containerships are nothing, I remembered the P&O ship REMUERA and this is what internet came up with

http://www.canadianshipper.com/transportation-and-logistics/world-s-largest-reefer-container-ship-is-under-way/1000024622/

So basically it is what Derek just said, as long as the IMO number is correct, all variations of a ship will come up[, including her later conversions to a livestock carrier.

According to Gerd Uwe Detlefsen's "Die Typschiffe der Sietas-Werft"
Sietas type no. 83, 83 a, 83 b and 83 e were containerships. Oulmes and her sister Oualida were according to that book type 83 e, containership 195 TEU (also equipped for refrigerated and palletized cargo)*

*In the book it says, "auch Frucht- und Palettenfahrt". As I suppose that "Frucht" (fruits) need cooling during transportation I interpreted "Fruchtfahrt" in my translation as the transport of refrigerated cargo.

Cheers,
Jens

Denis,

Hopefully investigation will prove which category they should all be in. But of course as ownership and trades they are engaged in change some modifications may mean they are spread across three categories. As long as they all have IMO numbers a search will locate them wherever they reside

Thing is she & her sistership (in original look) are spread across 3 categories. Unless that's Ok, some tiding up must be done.

Built as a General Cargo ship with some reefer capacity I believe for Moroccan owners. She was seen in Rotterdam by me carrying container on deck and probably in the holds too when she was new. That probably does not answer the question though does it!

Maybe someone else with a knowledge of Sietas built ships has more information.

best regards
Derek

Is she a reefer or general cargo or container ship?
